Tapestry
is sponsored by
Monumental United Methodist Church in Portsmouth, Virginia, and rehearses weekly
for two hours.
Tapestry
formed in July, 2001 as a daytime ministry. We enjoy ringing challenging
repertoire, sharing our talents, educating listeners to the variety of handbell
music, and the stories behind the music. We like to work together and share good
music and chocolate. Like the fabric and thread of a woven tapestry, the
ensemble is a blend of traits and talents that produces a fine texture of music
to the glory of God.
We average about 20 concerts per year and were awarded the Ruth Morse Wilson
Handbell Award from the National Federation of Music Clubs in 2004. Some of our
highlights include attending and performing at the American Guild of English
Handbell Ringers (AGEHR) Area III Director’s Seminar in 2002, the International
Handbell Symposium in Toronto, Canada in 2004, the AGEHR Area III
Intergenerational Handbell Festival in Hickory, NC in 2006, the Solo to Ensemble
Extravaganza in Villanova, Pennsylvania in 2007, and the International Handbell
Symposium in Orlando, Florida in 2008. Tapestry was a featured performing
ensemble for the
Tidewater Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) Region III Convention
in July, 2009 where we premiered a commissioned unpublished quartet arrangement,
Variations on Prospect, by Michael Keller.
